YogaVita, le Blog de Tracey Farrell, Février 2015

This month I want to shed some light on some common misconceptions that have recently come up when talking with people about Yoga.

1. « I’m not flexible enough to do yoga»
You do not need to be flexible to start yoga. Flexibility will come with a regular practice of yoga. «The brain creates set lenghts for muscles based on regular actvity. Consistent practice of yoga lengthens the muscles ,improving  the range of motion througout the body. This creates new set lenghts in the brain»
Ray Long, certified Othopedic Surgeon & author of the key poses of yoga.

2. « I‘m not thin enough, I’d prefer not practice in front of others »

You do not, thank gooodness, need to have «a perfect body» to do yoga.
With a regular practice we become more aware of the infinite power & beauty of our own individual bodies. These days there’s so much advertising, time , energy & money  poured into dieting, burning calories, losing weight to attain the « perfect body» imposed by society. Does all of this bring deep inner satisfaction & contentment?
Or increase dissatisfaction?

One of my  teachers  reminded me of this the other day when she  stated simply «the body is a shape».
This struck a very fine chord  within me.
When we are continuouslly striving to be different or live up to what  the outer world or society imposes as «supposed perfection» we may lose connection with ourselves. Continuously comparing ourselves to others can be great a source of dissatisfaction.

Through the practice of yoga we make  a positive connection with our bodies.
We observe that which is more subtle & so very authentic.
The inhale
The exhale
Our skin, bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, organs
Our energy
The body thrives on self acceptance, self awareness & self love.

3. «I’m not young enough to do yoga»

Yoga has numerous anti-ageing benefits.
The best proof I have of that are my 3 teachers:
Babacar Khane is 80 years old, Nicolas & Marie Christine Leberre, retired doctors, have been practicing yoga for 40 years.

All three do basic, accesible postures. They also do more advanced postures such as the head stand & balancing postures with ease, grace & a smile on their face! They are curious, always open to what they want to learn next.  An inspiration.

You may have noticed something?
The «not enough» keeps coming back. Could this  be at the root of much of our suffering?

I look forward to practicing together,
