« Fan of Uddiyana Bandha»
After a corporate yoga class last week one student affirmed enthusiastically « I’m a fan of Uddiyana Bandha» .
Hearing the words fan & uddiyana bandha in the same sentence was music to my ears.
It is very rewarding for teachers when our students choose to practice these yoga techniques , that do us the world of good, independently.
Other students enthusiastically confirm that this practice helps to overcome bouts of insomnia & anxiety.
Uddiyana is sanskrit for «upward flying « and bandha « force or contraction.
This practice involves swallowing the abdominal are at the end of the exhale. This exercise has a positive effect on the stomach (second brain) and all the abdominal organs. Uddiyana bandha is also an excellent breathing technique. At the end of the exhale the diaphragm rises. This movement fortifies, fluidifies & relaxes our diaphragm, this large skeletal muscle which pays a fundamental role in our breathing.
Important note: It is reccommended to learn this exercise with a teacher. Contraindications: Practice only on an empty stomach. Do not practice this bandha during menstruation, pregnancy or if you have high blood pressure.
Practicing a series of Uddiyana Bandha everyday is beneficial for our mental health, our emotional health & our digestion. Practice regularly to create inner " sukha" , a happy space.
