Despite huge advancements in technological communication a sentiment of loneliness
appears to be an increasing social problem which impacts on our health & well-being.
It is difficult to feel lonely & perhaps even more difficult to admit to it. Who has never felt
lonely?
Loneliness is not just associated with isolation. We may be surrounded by people & still
feel lonely! In other cases the feeling of loneliness may often be engravend by a feeling of
helplessness, or lack of support. What is the root cause of this suffering ? Is it because
from a young age we become accustomed to having somebody there who would support
us, or look after us ? As a child?
The etymology dictionary tells us that the word alone is a contraction of "All One".
Considering the word from this new perspective awakens inner Confidence & Strenght.
By developing conciousness of our own thoughts & tendencies we can get to know
ourselves better. Self knowledge does not come naturally to many of us.
The good news ? It is never too late to start.
Breathing techniques & Yoga help to improve our self-awareness. Thanks to this awareness new perspectives can unfold. Change always begins within.When we change our view of our inner world. We change our perception of our outer world.
Doing yoga could be one solution to overcoming the feeling of «loneliness».
How so, I hear you ask? if it practiced by one-self ?
Yoga is the Sanskrit word for the «union» of the the body & mind. Yoga is a holistic
science that seeks to dissolve the dis & restore our true state, the Ease.
By reconnecting the body and breath we can lessen the feeling of loneliness,
the source of much human suffering. With regular practice we become happier in ourselves. This contentment reflects in our entourage . As we cultivate calm we create an environment which is favourable for satisfying relationships.
In our group yoga classes on wednesday nights, after yoga practice we drink a herbal tea in a friendly & relaxed atmosphere: relaxed faces and flowing conversation...
Furthermore, regular yoga practice and correct breathing calms the sympathetic nervous system and so the fight flight tendencies provoked by stress.
Yoga restores balance by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system which promotes relaxation, regeneration and rest.
